Recently, Juan Li from ADIIEE and Tao Yang from Wuyi University (Jiangmen, China) published one research paper entitled “Ozone and hydroxyl radical induced degradation of micropollutants in a novel UVA-LED-activated periodate advanced oxidation process” in Environmental Science & Technology, one of the top journals in the field of environment.
Graphic abstract of the article
This work demonstrated that periodate (PI) could be effectively activated by the light emitting diode at irradiation wavelength in the ultraviolet A range (UVA-LED/PI) to degrade micropollutants with different structures. The UVA-LED/PI AOP efficiently degraded the selected eight model micropollutants, demonstrating a broad-spectrum micropollutant degradation ability. The underlying mechanisms of micropollutant degradation were illustrated by experimental methods and kinetic modeling using naproxen (NPX) as a representative compound. Hydroxyl radical (?OH) and ozone (O3) were identified as the dominant reactive species and they contributed evenly to the degradation of NPX. The pivotal role of the quantum yield of PI during light photolysis of PI was highlighted. Nine oxidation products of NPX oxidation by the UVA-LED/PI AOP were detected mainly via the hydroxylation, dealkylation, and oxidation pathways. The impact of water background constituents on micropollutant degradation by the UVA-LED/PI AOP was also investigated.
The UVA-LED/PI AOP may serve as a promising technology for the oxidative treatment of micropollutants in aqueous environment, especially considering the superior advantages of the UVA-LED light to the traditional mercury-based UV light.
